Conversations about Racial Consciousness in Education

October 13, 2009

by Scott Capron – Jeffco Pleasant View Elementary Principal
Rob Nickerson – Jeffco Elementary Content Specialist
October 13, 2009

“Thank you Scott & Rob! This workshop was very helpful. Conversations went deep, attitudes changed and awareness was created around this topic.” That was a comment made by one workshop participant. Educators from around the state came together to learn, share and network. The morning focused on four Learning Goals:

  1. Explore how dynamics of student’s race & racial self-identity impact learning.
  2. Uncover the impact race has played in your life.
  3. Explore frameworks & structures for schools to become more culturally responsive.
  4. Examine staff development strategies that support educators in closing achievement gaps.

Participants discussed their interpretations of common terms, such as “racism, colorblind, equity, anti-racism, white privilege”, etc. to seek common understanding. Scott & Rob shared helpful tools that participants could take back & use in their workplace. A Cultural Proficiency Continuum & The Five Elements of Cultural Competence were just two of those tools. “I think I can easily take the tools back and begin to develop awareness and engage in racial conversations with staff members and the community.” Participants had time to process information and network with each other.

Once again, thanks to Rob & Scott for a valuable morning of learning and networking!
