Becoming (and Remaining) a Learning System in Challenging Times (Part 1)

June 4

With Fred Brown: Learning Forward’s deputy executive director
As we step forward into rapidly unfolding changes generated by COVID 19, educators are being challenged to think more flexibly, adaptively and creatively than ever before. Sometimes it can be hard to maintain a growth and innovator’s mindset while managing the barrage of change. Learning Forward Colorado is committed to learning with you.
We know that one of the most challenging moments in any organization is when change occurs. Individuals often have varied responses, ranging from innovation to resistance. Effective leaders consider the magnitude and implications of the changes and support their teachers and school leaders as they move through the change process.
District educational systems must “learn” quickly to assist principals, school-based teams, and individual classroom teachers as they work to change their professional practices. Districts must also develop procedures and practices that help them navigate the ever-changing educational landscape, allowing change to become a regular part of their work. In essence, it’s important that school districts see themselves as “learning systems.”
Session participants will:
  • Identify key attributes of a learning system and ways to strengthen teaching and learning;
  • Understand key roles in the district in leading, modelling, and facilitating learning; and
  • Explore the change process and develop and implement strategies to manage first- and second-order change.

Deadline: The Learning Professional, June 2021, Article Submissions

February 15, 2021

In partnership with the Education Trust, this issue of The Learning Professional will focus on ways professional learning can equip teachers and leaders at all levels to take concrete steps that turn racial equity values into action. Articles should describe effective actions for equity and describe the evidence that they are making a difference. We aim to feature multiple entry points to the urgent work of building equity, and we encourage submissions from educators and thought leaders at all levels (e.g., classrooms and schools; districts and charter management organizations; states and provinces; technical assistance providers and scholars). Topics may include: hiring and support practices that nurture teachers and leaders of color; instructional strategies for centering the voices of students of color; redesigned structures for class scheduling, staffing, and student discipline to disrupt inequity; selecting and implementing rigorous and culturally-sustaining content and curriculum; the evolving roles of district chief equity officers; and courageous leadership for productive struggle.
