Even before the last 15 months of upheaval and unrest, educators were carrying a heavy load of required content and standards. But over the last 15 months, we were forced to add even more techniques, approaches, and content to our proverbial backpacks. As we head into summer, it’s time to dump everything onto the ground and repack for the journey ahead. What parts of school and our teaching will we leave behind forever? What new things will we carry forward?
In this webinar, we will reflect on these questions as we explore this moment as a potent turning point for schools and teachers. Our world is changing and it’s clear that our schools need to also change, but how? Over the last 12 months, the cracks in our system were blown wide open and schools were forced to pay more attention than ever to social emotional learning, equity, connection and community engagement.
Purpose Learning is an age-old framework of learning grounded in the ideas of John Dewey and others that envisions learning as thinking, feeling, and doing. At the intersection of these three domains, students have a better chance of connecting with the purpose in learning — and exploring who they are and how then to connect to the world. We will explore how Purpose Learning is more relevant than ever for the ways in which school is changing and how it can serve as a useful road map for the future. We will explore what purpose is, how it helps students, and what next steps we teachers can take to foster it in our students.
